Rice fields of Basar, Leparada

Located in the central region of Arunachal Pradesh, Leparada is a district characterised by rolling green hills, expansive paddy fields, dense forests, flowing rivers and a rich indigenous cultural heritage. Established in 2018, the district has its headquarters at Basar and comprises four administrative circles: Basar, Dari, Tirbin and Sago.

The name Leparada comes from the local Galo dialect, where Lepa means “centre” and Rada functions as an intensifying suffix, conveying the sense of “most” or “the very centre”. The name reflects the district’s geographical position in Arunachal Pradesh.

Leparada is predominantly inhabited by the Galo community, one of the major indigenous tribes of Arunachal Pradesh, known for its distinctive cultural traditions, traditional agricultural practices, cuisine, weaving, bamboo crafts and community life.

Agriculture and horticulture remain important to the local economy, with paddy cultivation, fruit orchards and other traditional farming practices shaping the landscape and livelihoods of the people.

The district's natural landscape offers an inviting setting for exploration and outdoor experiences. Its forested hills, river valleys, streams and rural settlements provide opportunities for trekking, camping, nature exploration and cultural experiences.

The landscape changes with the seasons, from vibrant green fields during the growing season to golden stretches of ripening paddy.
